Mettlach Villeroy and Boch Antique Etched German Lidded Mug Beer Stein. Stoneware, etched tapestry , 0.5L, pewter lid, signed by C. This beer stein has been made in Germany around 1890 by Mettlach. This stein depicts a seated, bearded highlander with his elbows leaning on a table. In his left hand is a gray stoneware mug. Stein in mint condition, without damage, the lid works fine as well. We know that Warth worked on copper engravings and stoneware models for Villeroy & Boch, Mettlach, from 1854 to 1892. During this period, while he was incidentally not a resident of Mettlach, he created many well-known steins. In addition to this considerable output of steins, one finds Warths signature on quite a number of plates and plaques. His typical signature C. Warth is well known to stoneware collectors, and Warths style is unmistakable. Always clear in his design and with astonishing strength in statement in his scenes, Warth breathes life into his characters, forms and landscapes. Height: 6 1/2 inches. Mettlach #2959 Antique German Etched Beer Stein Lidded Mug – Bowling ca. Stoneware etched 0.5L inlaid lid signed by F. This beer stein has been made in Germany by Mettlach in 1897. Around the body it has three decorations of bowling scenes with the text on the top. Stein has been repaired , but it has hairline on the side. (Please check last photo). The name of Fritz Quidenus will not be unknown to collectors of Mettlach stoneware. Post states, somewhat misleadingly, that Quidenus was mainly active in stoneware decoration at Mettlach. This seems to suggest that this artist was resident in Mettlach as an employee of Villeroy & Boch. The assumption is quite understandable, as Quidenus is listed in none of the standard dictionaries of artists, such as Thieme-Becker or Bénézit, which list the names and describe the works of even the most minor figures in the fields of painting and sculpture. The omission of the elusive Quidenus and at the same time his well-known activity for Villeroy & Boch would therefore seem to indicate that he was an artist who worked only for the Mettlach firm, was consequently unknown outside the factory walls and who for this reason escaped the attention of all chroniclers of art. Mettlach Villeroy and Boch #2008 ca. 1890 Antique Etched German Lidded Beer Stein Inlaid Lid – May God Protect You. This etched beer stein has been made in Germany in 1890 by Mettlach Villeroy and Boch. This stein has been created by F. Stuck and introduce us to poem The Trumpeter of Säckingen, written in 1853 by Josef Viktor von Scheffel. Lid has been repaired, it has small hairline, works fine without problem. Second in set of three, with Nos. 2007 and 2009, based on a poem entitled The Trumpeter of Säckingen, written in 1853 by Josef Viktor von Scheffel, which tells the story of a love affair between a trumpeter and a barons daughter. Mettlach 5013 Antique Faience German Lidded Beer Stein – In Arte Libertas ca1900. This faience beer stein has been made in Germany around 1900s by Mettlach. Absolutely gorgeous piece hand painted and still in great condition. The society In Arte Libertas (In Art Liberty), founded in 1886 by Nino Costa, assembled an international group of artists who were at variance with what they considered provincialism in the official art policies of Rome.
