“Munich Child & Charles Zoller lid”. German ceramic, relief, 1/2 L, pewter lid. Text Reads, Wohl bekomm’s. ” & Translates to “To Your Health. By Merkelbach & Wick. Condition & Description: Overall an excellent condition specimen, only minor knock is a tiny fleabite at bottom edge and some crazing (fleabite shown in last pic, exactly as pictured). This Merkelbach & Wick stein has yet to be cataloged in the Beer Stein Library. The pewter lid, in tremendous detail, depicts Munich & the Bavaria statue which is a woman that represents the female personification of the Bavarian homeland and a lion – symbolic of strength, courage and loyalty – a very important symbol to the people of Bavaria. Finally, there is english text on the lid, Compliments of Chas. Zoller operated a furniture store from 1886 to 1908 in Rochester NY, thus the stein was given out during that period, likely as a form of advertising… Interestingly enough Charles Zoller left the furniture business in 1908 to pursue his true passion, photography, and in particular autochromes. He played a big role in bringing autochromes to the US. This is a fun and historically curious stein! Height: 6.4 tall from base to top of thumblift. Width: 3.7 at the base.
