Mold number 2001 C, known commonly as Book Spines For Philologists or Book Stein for Philologists, being part of the Mettlach Book Spine or Book Stein series, with artwork attributed to the famous Mettlach / German artist, Otto Hupp. Information quoted here draws from the online Beer Stein Library, credit to their site for inlay lid translations and for more information about antique steins and collecting than you could ever hope to learn. Part of a larger, very collectible / desirable, set of 12 Book Spine Steins that are harder and harder to find / assemble in good condition. 2001 C is the Book spines for Philologists. The book titles and authors on the body of the stein are turn of the 20th century texts that students of Philology would have studied / read in their pursuit of a successful career. A philologist is a scholar who is involved in the study of ancient language and literature. Most are employed as professors by universities. They are learned writers, philosophers and historians that translate and extensively annotate the ancient texts of Greece and Rome. The inlay depicts 2 owls; one serious and the other wearing a fool’s cap with bells, holding a fool’s staff in his talon similar to a court jester. The fool, utterly spontaneous and natural, lacks experience but also any trace of affectation. The serious owl represents wisdom attained which has affected his approach to life. At the top of the inlay are the latin words “Scientia” and “Lascivia” (“knowledge” and “playfulness”) and at the bottom are the words Es Leben beide Kauze!!! (Both should exist in life).
