Antique German Art Nouveau/Jugendstil Pewter Beer Stein Bicycle League c. 1905
Antique German Art Nouveau/Jugendstil Pewter Serving Beer Stein Bicycle Bike League c. Presented is a beautiful and very stylish beer stein designed in a very distinctive Jugendstil style – the German version of Art Nouveau. This style is very specific to Germany – it is characterized by simplistic and at the same time unusual linear forms. This style was extremely popular at the time. It lasted only a decade or two, but changed the perception of design forever. The stein is decorated with a Radfahrer Bund (Bicycle League) medallion and a presentation inscription: Ihren Wunderfahrten zum Andenken. 21 I guarantee the dating of around 1905 give or take 3 – 5 years. The stein is in a very good condition with some minor scratches and dings unavoidable in such a soft metal as pewter but no structural damages, losses, or repairs. It would require some cleaning but I will leave it to the new owner – some people prefer the antique look and patina for the pewter objects, some like to polish them to get a near silver impression it was intended to give at the time of manufacturing. A search of the Beer Stein Library for this mold number or “Gambrinus, ” or the saying on the front of the stein, “Festzug des Konigs Gambrinus” does not return any hits. The key to identification is the matching of the handle design to the Westerwald Beer Stein Handle Gallery as MG 85. This suggests that this is a currently uncatalogued Matthias Girmscheid. Saying on the front translates loosely to, The pageant of King Gambrinus. Features our favorite beer symbol, King Gambrinus admiring his creation in a raised, frothing vessel while revelers dance and play music and the beer flows freely from steins and a keg. 1 liter capacity, approx. 11.5″ tall with a 4.5″ base diameter. Antique German Jugendstil Art Nouveau Beer Stein Steinzeug Coblenz #123 c. Description: This beautiful stein was made around late 1910. Very typical Jugendstil (German Art Nouveau) style. Jugendstil beer stein of Steinzeug Industrie Coblenz were designed mostly by two prominent Jugendstil designers – Leonhard Hellmuth and Carl Moos. The steins made by this company are not very common but highly collectable. It was designed in a very specific manner that was called Jugendstil – the unique German version of Art Nouveau – the new aesthetics that took over the world in the late 1800s – early 1900s. The stein is made of saltglazed stoneware with cobalt blue glaze – the very traditional Westerwald ware in the distinctive Jugendstil aesthetics. I attribute the design to Paul Wynand – a well-know Jugendbstil ceramics deisgner who worked wth major beer stein manufacturers such us Steinzeug Coblenz, Reinhold Merkelbach, Marzi and Remy, S. Gerz and so on. But I could be wrong – it is hard to attribute, many Jugendstil designers used each other’s elemnts and patterns. 6 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity. Offered for your consideration is an antique Bohemian etched red flash glass beer stein. It dates to the mid-19th century. The stein is in overall good used estate condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. There is a slight amount of play in the pewter mount’s hinge, a small inclusion in the glass lid, light surface scratches and scuffing here and there, and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age.
