You are ordering this antique, German made, 1liter, pewter lidded beer stein in excellent condition for age. Mold number on base is 593. A search of the Beer Stein Library for this mold number or “Gambrinus, ” or the saying on the front of the stein, “Festzug des Konigs Gambrinus” does not return any hits. The key to identification is the matching of the handle design to the Westerwald Beer Stein Handle Gallery as MG 85. This suggests that this is a currently uncatalogued Matthias Girmscheid. Saying on the front translates loosely to, The pageant of King Gambrinus. Features our favorite beer symbol, King Gambrinus admiring his creation in a raised, frothing vessel while revelers dance and play music and the beer flows freely from steins and a keg. 1 liter capacity, approx. 11.5″ tall with a 4.5″ base diameter. Antique Early Pewter German Beer Stein Walzenkrug Saxonian dat. 1815
Antique Early Pewter German Beer Stein Walzenkrug Saxonian dat. Hello, my dear customers! I will be out of the country from September 2nd to September 12th. Please keep this in mind! This very interesting and impressive beer stein was made in Germany in the early 1800s. It is a so-called “Walzenkrug” – a cylindrical form beer drinking vessel that was very popular in the 1700s. The thumblift is a hollow ball – please note that the hollow balls for the thumblift are a very good sign of authenticity. They never made solid balls for the thumblifts before 1850 – 1860 and there are no repros with hollow balls – I guess it is very hard to reproduce. The stein shows a plain cylindrical body with no decorations. This cylindrical body with a broad hollow base and tapered lid is associated with the Saxonian pewter tradition. For about 150 years Saxonian pewterers from Leipzig, Dresden, Chemnitz, and other Saxonian towns were making more or less similar pewter steins that were very popular all over Germany from the early 1700s till the 1850s. The lid is engraved with the initials J. The inside of the lid shows pewter hallmarks. These hallmarks belong to a pewterer named Johann Gottfried Bohme who worked in the Saxonian town of Dippoldiswalde in the 1700s and early 1800s. Please note that the German pewter marks of the 1700s – first half of the 1800s usually (but not necessarily always) consisted of two identical marks for a town and one personal master pewterer’s mark. The master mark for J. Bohme shows the date of 1708. This is supposed to be the date of the pewter shop establishment. However, about 50% of German master pewter marks for the period show this date. I don’t know why they put this date and the others put real dates into their marks. Probably, 1708 was the date of the pewter marking law and some of the pewterers wanted to show that their shops were started at the very beginning. The stein is in great condition – it has some very minimal dings and scratches unavoidable for the soft metal as pewter, but no breaks, tears or repairs – a rare condition for beer steins this old. The stein is large and impressive, it is 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. Condition: Very good – no damage, no repairs, some minor dings and scratches. Height: 9.5 in. Antique German Military Regimental Beer Stein 10 Field Artillery Rgt. Hello, my dear customers! I will be out of the country from September 2nd to September 12th. Please keep this in mind! Presented is original regimental (Reservisten) stein. It belonged to Reservist Gefreiter (PFC) Bode who served in the 10 Field Artillery Regiment stationed in Hanover from 1896 to 1898. The stein is made of porcelain with lithophane in the bottom showing a tavern flirting scene. The stein is decorated with naive hand-painted scenes of military life typical for the 1890s. The body of the stein is in excellent condition with no chips cracks or repairs. The lid is a replacement. The stein stands 8 to the top of teh lid, 0.5 L capacity. Please note – this is original authentic regimental stein from the period. I guarantee my description and dating. Condition: Body excellent, lid replaced. Height: 10.5 in. Large Antique Etched Beer Stein by M. Girmscheid – Bowling Theme #1087 c. Description: Fantastic large antique German beer stein made in the “etched” technique that is usually associated with Mettlach. However, it was made by Matthias Girmscheid – one of the major beer stein manufacturers in early 1900s Germany. He established his own company in 1870 in Hoehr, now – Hoehr-Grenzhausen, the famous Westerwald stein-making area. The stein is made of pottery in an etched technique with hand-painted coloring. The design is quite interesting. The central medallion shows a man with a bowling ball ready to deliver. The side panels show people drinking in a tavern and saluting the bowler. Ein wack’rer Mann der kegeln kann. It’s a brave man who can bowl. Des Kegelspeil gibt Freuden viel. Bowling gives much happiness. The lid is made of ceramics without a framing pewter ring. This is typical for Girmscheid. It shows bowling pins and a bowl with the inscription Alle Neun! , the motto of the sport of bowling. The German version of bowling – Kegeln – was 9 pin game. This is a large stein measuring 10.25 tall with a capacity of 1 L. It is marked with the word “Germany” and model number 1087. Antique German Etched Beer Stein Drinking Cavaliers by Johann Peter Thewalt #1296 c. Description: This beautiful very old German beer stein is made in “etched” technique – the contours of the decoration are incised into the body. This technique was used by different manufacturers around the turn of the 19th century – the most famous was Mettlach, but also J. Remy, Hauber and Reuther, and some others used it to create very beautiful (and also expensive at the time) exclusive beer vessels. This one was made by Jo hann Peter Th ewalt around early 1900. The scene on the stein shows a group of Renaissance cavaliers drinking in a monastery yard with a monk coming from the cellar offering some more brew. The inscription reads: Ein guter Fund zur rechten Stund. A good find for the right hour. The stein is in excellent condition – no chips, lines or any other damages. The lid is pewter with a ceramic inlay which is also etched with two owls and a glass of wine (a symbol of drinking wisely in this case) and the word Prosit! – To your health! Please keep this in mind! This beer stein is one of the oldest beer drinking vessels. It dates back to the years of 1600s and was made in the town of Frechen – one of the most important centers of early stoneware production in Germany. The tradition of “Bartmann” or “Bearded man” beer steins began in mid 1400s in the town of Cologne – another important stoneware production center in Renaissance period Germany. It became so popular that every town in Rheinland that was involved in pottery produced their own version for almost two hundred years. There are very similar Bartmann beer steins produced in Raeren, Siegburg, etc. The stein is made of brown saltglazed stoneware. The bearded face was made on a separate medallion and applied. There is also another applied medallion at the center of the stein. The bearded man steins from Frechen are the most classical of all the Bartmann pieces. They were produced for over a century and exported in large quantities to England, Scandinavia and the New World. The stein is in excellent condition for about 300 – 350 years old. Most of the Bartmannskruege are repaired or restored. This one has no structural damage and no repairs and no major cracks. There are some glaze chipping spot in the body and some minor surface crazing. Just very minor age-related wear. Other than that – no problems. This size is larger than usual and the condition is extremely rare. This is a beautiful and very impressive piece that has about 400 years behind it! I guarantee my description and my dating.
