Antique German Character Beer Stein – Nun by Merkelbach and Wick #270 c. Description: This very interesting German beer stein belongs to the family of character steins – steins made in a shape of an object or person. They are also called “figural”. This particular one is made in a shape of a happy smiling nun. H er head forms the lid. Made of the very tan pottery with pewter mounts. The nun character steins are relatively rare – there were many differ ent monk steins made by various manufacturers in the late 1800 s – early 1900s but only few nuns. The monk (and nun) character steins were very popular in Germany because usually the monasteries and monks were associated with beer brewing and drinking. The stein is m ade of the very traditional pottery with pewter mounts. The stein is in excellent mint condition. It is 7 tall to the top of the head, 0,5L capacity. Antique German Pewter Beer Stein/Pitcher Kanne by J. G. Guenzler dated 1865
Antique Pewter German Beer Stein/Pitcher Kanne by J. Description: Antique German pewter beer stein/pitcher from about 1860s. Classical baroque-style shape with a spout – the Germans call it “Kanne”. Please note – it may not look like a standard beer pitcher. However, it is decorated with a hops cone and hops leaves. I doubt any other vessel would be decorated this way. A sit-on, not hinged lid. A “hops cone” for the finial -typical for the beer steins/pitchers. The handle is wrapped with a leather strap for preventing the hands from slipping. Marked on the inside with J. He became a master perwterer in 1833. The stein is engarved on the front with the name M. Schreppel and dated 1865. Excellent condition – there is no tears or any damage at all, no repairs, no major dings or scratches It is 10 tall to the top of the finial, 1L capacity. Circa 1900 German Lithopane Beer Stein RARE
Seen through the bottom of the stein. Measures 4 1/2 inches across. The stein itself stands 7 1/2 inches to the top of the pewter lid and almost 9 inches to the top of the thumb piece. I’ve shown left and right images to give you the full German inscription. The porcelain is without cracks or nicks. The pewter lid has some minor denting and mis-shapes. The hinge pin is missing and the lid has been wired to the handle piece. I can identify no “maker’s marks” anywhere on the lid, porcelain or image. I look at this and see a craftsmanship from 100+ years ago that isn’t done today. Sure, lithopanes are still done but not with the care and precision this represents. The artwork is exacting – the fragility obvious. If you have James R. Stevenson’s book Antique Steins, please refer to page 102, item #193a. Many hand-painted steins go for much more, but I have yet to see a lithopane to match this. Those made today have thick clay bases that present no challenge. The light and shadow presented here shows an attention to GREAT detail.
