Antique Bottle Green Glass German Beer Stein w/Fancy Pewter Mountings c. Description: Presented is a beautiful bottle-green glass German beer stein with fancy pewter mountings. The body of the stein is made of Bohemian crystal glass. The glass was hand-blown and decorated with the thumb-print patters on the inside, creating a wonderful optical effect. It was mounted with a pewter lid and foot-ring/pedestal of exceptional quality. The lid is engraved with a presentation inscription: 1898 Gew. Weitlingen The stein was a gift to a certain Vorst Y. Meyer for singing in the town of Weitlingen in Bavaria. It is dated 1898. The stein is in excellent flawless condition – a collector’s dream. It is 9 tall to the top of the finial, 0.5L capacity. This is from the 1914 Christmas in the trenches when troops on both sides lay down their arms and celebrated together in peace, played football in No-Man’s-Land, exchanged chocolates and cigarettes and toasted humanity in the face of horrific war. Included in this lot is a beautifully illustrated book detailing this amazing story of human triumph during wartime, with narrated CD and song by noted folk singer John McCutcheon about the 1914 Christmas truce.
