Antique Porcelain German Beer Stein Zwiebelmuster Onion Pattern Meissen c. Description: Beautiful highly decorated porcelain beer stein made by the Meissen factory – the first European porcelain production plant that started in 1706. Overall – a fantastically decorated piece – a one of a kind treasure. Large and massive “Bierkrug” with a cylindrical body and elegant lid. Decorated with blue on whiteintricate floral motifs. This is the type of decoration is called “Zwiebelmuster” – “Onion pattern” and usually associated with Meissen porcelain. First produced under the guidance of Meissen director Johann Höroldt in 1732, the so-called “blue onion” pattern was actually an adaptation of an early oriental “tree of life” motif. In Germany, the pattern – or any of its many variations – is known as Zwiebelmuster, or “onion pattern”. Sometimes it is also called “Indisch Blau” or Indian blue, sometimes “Strohblumenmuster” or Strawflower pattern. Sometimes this pattern was called Rauenstein after a town in Thuringia where several porcelain factories were making wares with this pattern. Th ey are featured in G ary Kirsner’s “The Beer Stein Book”. I have provided a scan from the book for the reference. The stein is in excellent flawless condition, there is no damage, lines or repairs of any kind. It stays impressively 8 tall to the top of the finial, 1 L capacity. Antique German Porcelain Character Beer Stein – Monk w/Lithophane by E. Description: This very interesting German beer stein belongs to the family of character steins – steins made in a shape of an object or person. They are also called “figural”. This particular one is made in a shape of a smiling monk wearing red brown robe. His head forms the lid. It is fully hand-painted – the robe, his face, eyes and lips are hand-painted by a decorating artist. The porcelain character monk is relatively rare – there are many varieties of monk character steins in stoneware and pottery, but this stein is made of porcelain. It has a lithophane picture in the bottom – a picture that you can see against the light. The lithophane presents a picture of a flirting couple. The thumblift is made in form of a lyre – most likely, it was special ordered as a gift for a musician. This monk stein is well-known within the beer stein collectors community. It was once suggested that this stein was made by August Saeltzer, but most recent research disproved it. It is now positively determined that these porcelain monks and nuns were made by Eduard Kick in Amberg. The stein is in excellent condition, with some minimal age-related paint wear. Antique German Porcelain Beer Stein Occupational Miller w/Lithophane c. Description: This beer stein belongs to the “occupational” family of German beer vessels. It was made for a miller who was very proud of his occupation. The steins of this sort were quite expensive at the time and could be compared with the regimental or “Reservisten” family of collectible antique beer steins. The stein was made around 1880 – 1890 of hard porcelain with enameled art and ornate pewter lid. It is decorated with a nicely hand-painted over transfer outline of a pair of heraldic rampant lions holding a water wheel with other tools of the miller’s’s trade – millstone and grinding rolls. The name of the miller is written beneath: “Johann Hobmeier” The inscription reads: Hoch lebe das edle Handwerk der Muller! – Long live the noblde handcraft of the miller! The one at the very bottom says: “Eher soll die Welt verderben als vor Durst ein Muller sterben” – The world should come to an end before a miller should die of thirst. The stein has a lithophane – a picture in the bottom that you can only see through light – showing a loving couple kissing. Most likely, it’s a farewell kiss before the hunter goes to the mountains. The stein is in excellent condition, with only some minor age-related wear. There are no chips, cracks or lithophane crazing. The stein is 9.25 tall to the top of the finial, 0.5L capacity. For your consideration is an old German hand painted beer stein, depicting a 2 hunters a hunting dog and a maid. It measures 11″ high to the tip of the finial, has a base diameter of 4.5″, weights 2 pounds and 11 ounces. It is in pretty good vintage/used condition with consistent loss painting as shown on the posted photos and a small/superficial chip on the bottom edge (see last photo). Antique Porcelain German Beer Stein Capo di Monte Capodimonte Harvest Fest c. Description: This magnificent 8.5 tall porcelain beer stein is quite unusual and does not come up very often. It was made in porcelain relief technique and depicts an Ancient Greek scene with relief figures, highly detailed and carefully hand painted. The scene represents an ancient Greek or Roman harvest fest. All around the stein are festivity scenes with oxen carrying fruits of harvest, men, women and children celebrating the harvest. A figure of god Bacchus as a young child with a Cornucopia tops the lid. A similar mark was used by E. Bohne Soehne – the famous maker of character steins. But this one is not Bohne, even though the quality of porcelain craftsmanship is astonishing. The stein has the most admirable brass mounts with the detailed lip ring, the hinge, and the thumblift in the form of an eagle. The stein is in excellent condition with only minimal wear. There are some very minor relief flakes but no damage or repairs. It is large and impressive standing 10.5 tall, 1 L capacity. Condition: Excellent with minor flakes/wear. Maker: Capo di Monte. An antique German half-height porcelain beer stein by Martin Pauson, late 19th century. Character style tankard, one of Pauson’s “Munchner Kindl” or “Munich Child” designs, with pewter fittings. 7.25″h x 3.5″w x 5.25d (including handle). In good antique condition, with no chips or cracks observed, just displaying general surface wear consistent with age, including dulling and surface scratches to the pewter and some decoration rubbing/loss, as well as some scattered production irregularities (such as pits) – see pictures. Additionally, the lid is loose and can rotate within its pewter fitting. Pewter lid fitting is engraved, possibly H. Stein is inscribed Munchner Kindl / Martin Pauson, Munchen.
