2L Vintage Hand Painted German Pottery Pewter Lidded Beer Stein Mug Tankard. Preowned but never used. Only used as a collector’s display. He was in the Navy on the USS New Jersey. This stein has been in my wife’s family ever since. Marzi & Remi began making steins around 1879 and most of Gustav Thinwibel’s work was done in the late 1800s. He was born in 1853 and died in 1933. The high relief hand painted scene is of a woman greeting a husband or boy friend coming home. This piece is referred to or named as “Tyrolean Couple”. The translation to the left of the handle is something like a Hello. God’s greetings, come in, bring good fortune with you. The phrase Gruss Gott is a greeting common in the southern part of Germany and in Austria. It was used as Greet God as a hello. The saying to the right of the handle translates to “East or West Home at home is the Best”. This was a common phrase in Germany in the 19th century. Catalogue or mold number 128. I couldn’t find any chips or scratches and the only slight imperfection is that the lid is just slightly off center. It is a 2 liter stein and stands about 15″ tall and about 5.25″ at the base. It weighs a little over 3 lbs. You can tell it is an authentic vintage piece because the inside of the pewter lid is lighter than the outside of the lid.
