Antique Mettlach German Stoneware Lidded Beer Stein # 2959 / 1.0L Bowling Scene
Antique Mettlach German Stoneware Lidded Beer Stein # 2959. The gray ground stein features an etched bowling scene with three bowling designs. The center scene shows a pig knocking down the bowling pins. The bowler shows great joy. There is a pig on one platform, marked F. ” and a fox on another platform, marked “Q. There are two large steins set on a double platform under the handle. “All’ neun und Kranz beim Kegelspiel-Wer das nicht schiebt, der schiebt nicht viel”. At the top, near the handle, the stein is marked, “1L”. The lid is inlaid with a design, and the lid rim is trimmed with pewter metal. The pewter thumblift has a tall rounded form. The base impressed mark is, “Mettlach VB Gesgesch 2959″ with other marks and a faded green mark. This mark dates the stein — 1885 – c. The stein has great color and form. SIZE: 10 inches high to the top of the thumblift x 5 3/4 inches wide from side to edge of handle. CONDITION: There is a very tiny nick on the center part of the top raised rim band (barely noticeable). The raised rim band near the bottom part of the handle has a speck of white pottery material with specks of gray color in this area. The lid edge show a minor ding. The stein is in very good, clean condition — was well cared for. Great collector’s stein. LARGE COBALT/BROWN SALT-GLAZED GERMAN BEER STEIN PITCHER PEWTER LID. This is a nice early stoneware stein pitcher from Germany. It has a relief design with geometric designs. It has ribbing around the base and neck. The pitcher is grey salt-glazed stoneware with the typical cobalt and brown glaze in Germany. There is a pewter lid with a stoneware conical insert that matches he pitcher. #686A is embossed into the bottom. The only marking I can find on this stein is a stamped P on the bottom. I have been told that a P often identifies the stein as a prototype. I will leave verification of that fact to the viewer. The stein has a German phrase on the front which I have only partially been able to decipher (will leave the translation to the viewer for fear of getting it wrong). This early stein is in amazing condition and would make a Great Addition to any Breweriana Collection. Condition: – Good to Very Good Condition. I find very few imperfections on this stein. There are some “age lines – splitting” where the handle attaches to the body of the stein. There are some minor decoration losses scattered throughout. The lid is in excellent condition. Antique German Stoneware Beer Stein King Gambrinus Regensburg Inlaid Lid c. 1870s
Antique German Stoneware Saltglazed Beer – Stein King Gambrinus Regensburg Inlaid Lid c. Description: This type of very old German beer steins is traditionally called “Regensburg” type even though the majority of them were produced in the Westerwald region. These steins are different from the very traditional Westerwald beer vessels – they did not use cobalt-based glaze so the steins keep natural clay color. In Germany, they call them “Model” steins referring to the method of manufacturing. These steins were press-molded to a wooden form, they were turned afterward to make the insides round, then they were fired and the salt was applied to create the very solid surface. The stein is circa the 1870s. The relief decor on the front of the stein shows King Ga mbrinus – the legendary inventor of hopped malt beer. It was a very common subject for Regensburg steins – a massive figure of the King sitting on a beer barrel and saluting with a stein. The sides of the stein are decorated with ornate hops vine motifs. The lid is pewter with 5-ring closed-type hing and the thumblift sitting on the lid – all typical for the 1870s. There is a porcelain inlay in the lid with hand-painted words: “Zur Erinnerung” – “For the memory”. The stein is in excellent condition – a rare thing for a stein this old. There are no chips, cracks or repairs. There are some manufacturing impurities, but they all are part of the manual manufacturing process. Remember, the Regensburg steins of the 1860s – 1870s were not industrialized ware, there were made by hand in small shops. The manufacturing glitches only make these pieces even more interesting. Large and impressive antique beer vessel with over 140 years of history behind it. It is 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, over 1L capacity. Height: 9.5 in. Lovely antique Beer Stein/Birnkrug from the Westerwald Region of Germany. Color is grey with hand incised cobalt blue floral decoration. Pewter lid shows some signs of age & the inside of the lid has some rust. Top of lid is engraved with the name A. 1 1/2 liter capacity. The Birnkrug is pear shaped & shows very few signs of its age but has some minor flaws due to being hand made. No chips, cracks or repairs that we can detect. Pewter lid & ball thumb lift. 10 1/2 to top of lid not including the thumb lift. Please enlarge & check out the photos as they are part of the description.
