Antique Early German Saltglazed Stoneware Beer Stein Birnkrug Muskau c. Description: The beer steins made before 1850s are quite rare – at that time, before the industrial revolution, the production was all manual. Every stein made in the early period was unique, decorated by hand and rarely replicated. This beautiful stein was made in the early 1800s, around 1820s, it is guaranteed old give ot take 10 years. It was made in the town of Muskau – on the very East of Germany at the border with Poland. This brown-glazed “Birnkrug” or “pear-shaped stein” in German, was very popular during the first half of 1800s. The Muskau factory produced them in large quantities in all kinds of sizes. The Muskauer stoneware was slightly lighter with thinner walls than it’s Westerwald counterpart, but still very sturdy and strong. The stein is decorated with floral rosettes in the central frieze higlighted with black glaze – the distinctive Muskau type of decor. There is also the so-called “chip-carving” decorations between the rosettes. The lid is pewter with the thumblift in form of the sitting crowned lion, and large closed type hinge – the absolute signs of pre-industrial production. There is also a pewter foot ring and lip ring. The lid is engraved with initials J. ” and number “12 – this is the tavern number used to identify the stein in a tavern. Many people in old Germany and even in the modern times kept their personal beer steins in their favorite tavern. The stein is in a good condition – there is a tight line in the neck, but nothing else – no chips or cracks, the pewter is in excellent shape. That’s a very good condition for a 200 years old piece. The stein is 10 tall to the top of the thumblift, about 1.5L capacity. I guarantee the authenticity. Condition: Tight line in the neck, otherwise excellent. Antique Early German Westerwald Stoneware Beer Stein Walzenkrug w/Hearts c. Description: The beer steins made before 1800 are quite rare – at that time, before the industrial revolution, the production was all manual. Every stein made in the early period was unique, decorated by hand and rarely replicated. This beautiful stein was made in the late 1700s, around 1780s – 1790s, it is guaranteed old give or take 10 years. It is made in a very traditional style of grey stoneware with cobalt-blue glaze. This is a very traditional beer drinking vessel called “Walzenkrug” or “Cylindrical” stein – a type that was produced for over centuries, from the mid-1600s to the mid-1800s. The production of saltglazed stoneware beer steins in the Westerwald region of Germany reached the highest quality by the mid-18th century. The center of the stein shows a very nice and intricate decor in the form of a rosette surrounded by hearts. The decorations are etched into the wet clay with a sharp instrument, glazed with cobalt-blue glaze, fired and saltglazed. The lid is pewter with hollow ball thumblift and large 5-ring closed type hinge. The lid is marked with pewter hallmarks consistent with the late 1700s dating. The stein is in a good shape – there is a very small chip on the upper edge see pic. Followed by a tight almost invisible hairline. The chip is completely covered when the lid is closed. There are also some overfired glaze spots – this is normal for the saltglazed wares of the period. The lid is in excellent shape with some scratches but no damage or repairs to the pewter. The stein is 8.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. I guarantee the authenticity. Condition: Very good – see description. Height: 8.5 in. Large Antique German Saltgalzed Stoneware Westerwald Etched Beer Stein/Pitcher c. Description: This very large antique pouring beer stein was made around the mid-1850s. It is a very traditional type of serving beer steins or “master steins” – large with a bulbous form called “Birnkrug” or “pear-shaped steins”. The stein is made of saltglazed stoneware hand-turned and manually decorated with a beautiful etched and incised into the body floral patterns. This was done with several kinds of wooden sticks when the clay was still soft. It is also glazed with cobalt -blue glaze The lid is pewter with the “combination” thumblift. Five-ring large closed type hinge. The stein is most likely from 1840s period. The lid is engraved with initials L. The stein is in excellent condition for the age – there are no cracks or hairlines. There are some manufacturing impurities due to the pre-industrial manual manufacturing technology. It is large and impressive pouring steins, standing 14 to the top of the thumblift, 2 1/2 L capacity. The capacity mark is etched in clay by the handle I guarantee my dating and description! The stein displays nicely, it’s a beautiful and significant historical beer vessel. The stein is large and impressive, 15 tall to the top of the thumblift, about 5 L capacity.
