Matthias Girmscheid Rare Figural German Ceramic Monkey Character Beer Stein Lid
Matthias Girmscheid was born in 1845 to merchant parents and began his working life in the family tradition, opening his own trading firm in 1870 in the town of Höhr. Girmscheid’s manufacturing company began it’s life in 1884 and was apparently engaged initially in the manufacture of clay pipes. It is not known precisely when Girmscheid expanded his operation to include the manufacture of beer steins and related stoneware products, but by 1903 the firm was listed as a “stoneware factory”. In 1920, in what was almost certainly a response to Germany’s difficult post-war economy, Girmscheid merged with the firm of Gilles & Sohn. In 1930, two years following the death of Matthias Girmsched, the composition of the firm changed again. The new firm was called Girmscheid, Michels & Company, and included among its owners: Karl Girmscheid, who had taken over for his father; Simon Gilles, of Gilles & Sohn; and Alfons and Eduard Michels. Following the death of Karl Girmscheid in 1950, the company went through a series of ownership changes, but it continues in operation today, enjoying a healthy business focused principally on the manufacture of traditional salt-glazed tableware and decorative items. 1945 RARE 83rd Infantry Division Thunderbolts WW2 Beer Stein Vilshofen Gilbert
No physical damage chips, cracks, or lines. This very rare or maybe one of a kind themed stein is part of the history of the 83rd Infantry Division during WW2 in Vilshofen, Bavaria, Germany. Glaze over the custom graphic is darkening with age. Normal stoneware production flaws expected with production techniques of the time.
Rare Antique German Stein Nudes & Krampus with Eagle Thumblift
Up for sale is a rare antique German beer stein with a cobalt blue salt glaze. The decorated pewter lid has an eagle thumb lift. The handle has a raised leaf design. There are three figures on the stein – a Krampus like figure dancing with a beer stein in one hand and a club in the other. He wears a hood with horns attached. The other two figures are nude women – one like Venus standing on a large seashell om the sea with a rising (or setting) sun in the background. The other nude is more like a Lorelei figure sitting on a rock in the waves. The outside of the stein is textured with a fine cloth like weave. There are blue stripes and near the bottom a decorated stripe with raised dot stripes above and below. The photos should answer most questions. Unmarked but probably dates to the late 1800s. In very good condition with a small chip on the underside and a small mark on the edge of the lid. A very unusual old stein with unusual decorations.

1945 RARE 83rd Infantry Division Thunderbolts WW2 Beer Stein Vilshofen Gilbert
You are ordering this rare, U. Army, 83rd Infantry Division, custom, 1 liter, German made, stoneware beer stein. Listing if for the stein only. Note that risque parts of stein are blurred with red circles in photos provided and that photos showing portions of period Division newspaper comics are for identification only and no other items are included with the listing but the stein itself. Important, surviving piece of 83rd Infantry Division unit history deserves preservation. 7.5″ tall, 4″ base diameter, weighs 2.3 oz empty. Art features Gilbert, the units Cartoon / Public Affairs (seen in period Thunderbolts newspaper publications) filling his mug. The units black, triangular insignia is clearly visible on his helmet. Appears to be a Garden of Eden scene with some deeper meaning to the soldier who had this stein produced. Soldier’s name, Nelson Fuhrer, is towards bottom of art. Artist name and year of stein creation, E. German city where stein produced, Vilshofen, Bavaira. Unit newspapers confirm elements of the 83rd were in Vilshofen, Bavaria and the Passau areas on the Danube river. Stein art is dated 1945. The blue stenciled “2” under the handle is mystery at this time. Unclear if multiple were made, this being the 2nd one or if the number has a different meaning. This historical military piece would appeal to anyone with ties to the 83rd Infantry Division, the 83rd Infantry Division Museum, Historical society, current or former Soldiers, the town of Vilshofen, German beer stein collectors, etc. Thank you for visiting Big Deal’s General Store!
