Antique German Patriotic Pewter Beer Stein/Server Kaiser Wilhelm I c. 1880s
Antique German Patriotic Pewter Beer Stein/Server Kaiser Wilhelm I c. Presented is a fantastic monumental German beer stein/server made in relief technique dedicated to the unification of Germany. It is made of thick heavy pewter with the body, handle and the lid made in sculptural picturesque way to hail German spirit. The front panel shows a carriage in Roman style with the Kaiser (Emperor) Wilhelm I driving it. In the back of the carriage sit German statesmen – Otto von Bismarck and Helmuth von Moltke, the architects of the creation of German Empire in 1871. Next to Kaiser is his son – Crown Prince Friedrich, the future Emperor Friedrich III. Next to the carriage we can see Emperor Charlemagne on a horse – the founder of the Holy Roman Empire. In front of him is a figure of an ancient German warrior, maybe Odoacer or Teodoric, or just a not specific ancient German warrior. On top of the whole scene is Nike – the winged goddess of victory. A group of three Cupids is flying near Nike. The rest of the body shows Coats-of-Arms of all German lands, cities and regions to show the significance of the Germany united in the Empire. The lid is toppled with the German imperial crown and the Prussian Eagle. It is engraved with a presentation inscription indicating that the stein was a gift to Herr Registator Kuekelhahn for his 25th jubilee working for the urban construction department. It was most likely created to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the unification of Germany in 1881, and the presentation inscription was made much later. I have included in my photos pictures of Wilhelm I, Friederich III and also Bismarck and Moltke. You can see that the relief portraits on the stein are made with excellent details and likeness. The stein is in an excellent condition with some minimal age-related wear but no structural damages, losses, or repairs. The stein is quite large and impressive, standing 11.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 2L capacity I have inclu. Height: 11.5 in. Auctiva offers Free Image Hosting and Editing. Antique Early German Faience Beer Stein Bayreuth Factory Bird Motif Signed BK c. Description: Presented is a very impressive and beautiful old German beer stein manufactured in the town of Bayreuth in northern Bavaria, Germany, on the Red Main river in a valley between the Franconian Jura and the Fichtelgebirge Mountains. Made of faience in bulbous form called “Birnkrug” (pear-shaped) in Germany, with hand-painted cobalt-blue decorations. It shows floral motifs with a bird as a main subject – nicely done in some kind of primitive but stylish, traditional 18th-century style. Birds were quite popular as a subject matter for faience stein in the 18th century, and Bayreuth factory used it more often then other manufacturers. Nice pewter lid with a hollow ball thumblift. This type of thumblifts was popular in the 1700s. The type of decoration and the shape of the lid and the thumblift suggest the stein was made in the first half of the 1700s. The stein is signed on the bottom with the factory mark – “BK” – this mark was in use from 1728 to 1744. “B” is for Bayreuth, “K” is for Knoller – the factory owner at the time. The mark underneath BK is the artist decorator’s mark. The other inscription on the bottom are later notes. The stein is in great condition for the ceramics item that old. There are minor flakes on the upper rim and some glaze wear on the inside. There are no chips or cracks – a rare thing for a faience piece that old. A large and impressive antique vessel standing 10.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, about 1.5L capacity. Year: 1728 – 1744. Height: 10.5 in. Auctiva offers Free Image Hosting and Editing. Antique German Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Factory Cold Paint Floral dat. 1819
Antique Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Factory Cold Paint Floral dat. Description: Presented is an early German beer stein made around the early 1800s. The stein was made in the factory of Schrezheim – one of the largest faience factories in Germany. The stein is made from traditional Schrezheim clay and glazed with a beautiful distinctive Schrezheim blue tin glaze. It was then painted by one of the factory decorators who created a beautiful red and gold picture of a bouquet of flowers – a very common subject for Schrezheim decoration. This is so-called “cold paint” – it was not fired, hence the age-related wear. Schrezheim was very famous in the late 1700s to early 1800s for it’s faience work and also for the best quality pewter lids. It was the longest-lasting factory – most of the faience production factories were shut in the early 1800s due to the competition from emerging stoneware industrialized production and cheaper glass production. But the Schrezheim factory lasted well into the late 1850s – early 1860s. The pewter lid has the hollow ball thumblift and five-ring closed style hinge. The lid is engraved with the original owner’s initials F. D and dated 1819. Please note – this is the real date, the stein was made in or before the year 1819. Note the ornate strap support and pewter reinforcement at the bottom of the handle. The stein is in a very good condition for the faience piece this old. There is no cracks or hairlines – it’s quite rare for faience. There is a very small cut on the bottom edge that was made for a possible foot ring and no other issues with the body. The lid is in perfect shape and sitting tight. There is also an incised monogram in the bottom – most likely the decorator’s mark. It is large and impressive, standing 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. Condition: Excellent for the age w/some paint wear. Height: 9.5 in. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting. Antique Early German Faience Beer Stein Hannover-Muenden Yellow Bird dat. 1759
Early German Faience Beer Stein Hannover-Muenden Yellow Bird dated 1759. Description: Antique German beer steins from before 1850 is a very specific category called “Early”. They are rare, highly collectable and include beer drinking vessels from as far as the 16th century to the first half of the 19th. These are the production samples from pre-industrial era – made by hand with the help of simple machinery. Presented is an early faience beer stein from Hannover-Muenden area. This was a very large faience producing area in the 1700s – early 1800s. The factory was active for exactly 100 years – from 1755 till 1854. It is well known for the most common decoration motive – a leaping or jumping horse. This, however, is a different subject matter – quite scarce. It shows a bird with yellow body sitting on a chimney pipe. The background is covered with the “sponge” paint – the magenta color background that was really made with a sponge. This type of background was used by many faience factories in the 1700s. The lid is pewter – a very unusual for the period, with a center medallion showing a horse rider and relief decorations along the perimeter. The lid is engraved with the original owner’s name – F. Anna Margreta Hassta and dated 1759. This is the real date – the stein was made in or before 1759. It is interesting to notice that the H-M factory made their own lids without using outside pewterers. Their lids are always different from the lids of other factories. The lid is marked on the inside with the Hannoverisch pewter mark. The stein is in excellent condition. There are some minor glaze flakes on the upper rim under the lid, but no chips, no cracks, no repairs whatsoever. This is a very rare condition for a faience item 270 years old. It is quite large and impressive, standing 8.5 tall, approx. Over 1 L capacity. This is a historical beer drinking vessel about 270 years old in excellent condition for the age. I guarantee my description and dating! Condition: Excellent for the age. Height: 8.5 in. Auctiva offers Free Image Hosting and Editing. Track Page Views With.
