Antique Pewter Engraved German Beer Stein Walzenkrug Saxonian c. 1804
Antique Pewter Engraved German Beer Stein Walzenkrug Saxonian c. Description: This very interesting and impressive beer stein was made in Germany in the early 1800s. It is a so-called “Walzenkrug” – a cylindrical form beer drinking vessel that was very popular in 1700s. The thumblift is a hollow ball – please note that the hollow balls for the thumblift is a very good sign of authenticity. They never made solid balls for the thumblift before 1830 – 1840 and there is no repros with hollow balls – I guess it is very hard to reproduce. The form of the base and the lid is usually associated with Saxonian pewter tradition. The stein is elaborately engraved all over. It has a large Saxonian Coat-of-Arms engraved on the front with Saxonian Royal crown and floral de corations on the sides. Beautiful and skillful work of art. The lid is engraved with initials Chr. It is fully marked with pewterer’s and town marks for Gottfried August Krause – a pewter shop established in 1778 in Dresden, Saxony. I have provided a sc an of his pewter touch marks from the E. Hintze monumental work on German pewter marks see my last pic. The stein is in incredibly good condition – it has some very minimal dings but no damage whatsoever – a rare condition for beer steins this old. Don’t get fooled by the shiny appearance – the stein is really original, including the engraving. It was kept very carefully and polished by the previous owners to resemble silver. It is practically impossible to fake the touch marks of a real pewterer from the period. I have been collecting beer steins for many years and I can stand behind my words. The stein is large and impressive, it is 10.5 tall, over 1L capacity. Height: 10.5 in. Title: Antique Pewter German Beer Stein Wlazenkrug Saxonian c. Auctiva offers Free Image Hosting and Editing. Antique German Character Beer Stein Smiling Monk Merkelbach/Wick 0.3L c. 1890s
Antique German Character Beer Stein – Smiling Monk by Merkelbach and Wick 0.3L c. Description: This very interesting German beer stein belongs to the family of character steins – steins made in a shape of an object or person. They are also called “figural”. This particular one is made in a shape of a monk wearing his robe with a rosary on his side. His head forms the lid – he’s got a smiling happy impression on his face. Monks were always asociated with brewing and beer drinking so a stein in form of a monk was the most popular character stein in Germany. Made of the very traditional gray saltglazed stoneware with cobalt-blue glaze and pewter mounts. It has the same body but the head is different – he has a beard and wearing a hood. I also have several monk steins in a larger size. Please take a look at my auctions. Excellent flawless condition – no chips, cracks or other damage. This is a smaller stein – it is 6 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0,3L capacity. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Track Page Views With. Auctiva’s FREE Counter. Antique German Faience Beer Stein Hanau Enghalskrug Delft Style c. 1780s
Antique German Faience Beer Stein Hanau Enghalskrug Delft Style c. Description: Presented is an early German beer stein made around the late 1790s. The stein was made in the factory of Hanau – one of the oldest faience factory in Germany. The stein is made from traditional Hanau red clay and glazed with white tin glaze. It was then painted by one of the factory decorators who created a very simple but beautiful blue decor in Delft style with a house and a fantasy bird. The steins of this shape with a long neck – are called in Germany “Enghalskrug” – “narrow neck stein”. Nice pewter lid with pewterer’s mark on the inside – I was unable to identify it. The small solid ball for the thumblift was often used by Hanau pewterers in the 1700s. The stein has a factory mark “D” incised in the clay in the bottom. Somebody has written “Hanau” with a red pencil as well – that was a later inscription. Beautiful piece of beer drinking culture over 200 years old. There is no cracks or hairlines, just some age-related wear. This is a fantastic condition for a faience item this old. The stein is 10 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity.
