Large Antique German Engraved Pewter Beer Stein/Screw Bottle Engraved c1830s
Large Antique Engraved Early German Pewter Beer Stein/Screw Bottle Marked c. Description: This very interesting antique object – pewter screw bottle was made in the early 1800s, it is about 200+ years old. This is a very traditional drinking vessel – a type that was produced for over centuries, from the mid-1600s to mid-1800s. It could be used as a beer or water or even a soup container when it was supposed to be transported. They were made of pewter, stoneware and sometimes of serpentine stone. This particular bottle is a very large one – I have rarely seen such a gigantic vessel. It measures 11 tall with the ring down and holds about 3 liter or 3 quarts. The bottle imade in a slightly tapered round shape with a fancy ring in the lid. It is engraved with a presentation inscription “Zum Andenken” – “For the memory”, ornate floral motifs and a medallion with a crossoatop of the abbreviation “IHS” and the initial F. ” Apparently it was a gift to (or from) a religious person or a priest – “IHS” is the Christogram for “Jesus. It is marked on the inside with the pewterer’s mark that I attribute to Anton Lachner, a pewterer in Linz, Austria, recorded as an unlicensed master. It is hard to read the mark, but the letters A. Point to this particular pewterer, the years of 1818 and 1834 are consistent with the bottle dating. The bottle is in good shape – there are some dings and dents due to the softness of metal, but no breaks and no leaks. The bottle is quite large and impressive, standing 11 tall with the handle down, 3L capacity. I guarantee the authencity. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting. Large Antique German Brown Earthenware Beer Stein Melonenkrug Bunzlau c. 1750s
Antique Early German Brown Earthenware Beer Stein Melonenkrug Bunzlau c. Description: Presented is a rare example of early German pottery made around mid-1700s. This high-fired earthenware brown-glazed beer stein was made in Bunzlau – the town in Lower Silesia. In fact, all the pottery production from small towns in Lower Silesia is called “Bunzlau”. Every German town and every region that was known to make pottery had it’s own unique technologies and trade secrets. That’s why we can determine where a particular piece was made based on the appearance, style and the type of the pottery. The steins of this kind were called “Melonenkrug” or “Melon-shaped stein” because of round shape and vertical or diagonal ribs. These ribs were made by hand from inside initially and later with a help of a special instrument. The lead-based brown glaze was typical for Bunzlau. The pewter lid is dome-shaped with hollow ball thumblift. It is engraved with initials F. The pewter lip ring and neck ring were intended to support the neck and is very typical for Bunzlau Melonenkruge. The stein is large and impressive – it stands 15 tall to the top of the thumblif, with approx. A very similar but smaller stein is featured in Gery Kirsner’s “The Beer Stein Book” on page 40. The stein is in a good condition, the appearance is excellent. The handle was broken some time ago and glued back together, supported by the pewter handle strap. Otherwise no issues – no cracks or chips or any other repairs. Some age-related glaze and pewter wear only. This is a very good condition overall for a stein over 250 years old. It is very impressive and elegant and a true historical piece that carries over 200 years of both culture and technology. I guarantee the authencity. Large Antique German Regensburg Beer Stein King Gambrinus Humorous Inlay c. 1870s
Large Antique German Regensburg Beer Stein King Gambrinus w/Humorous Porcelain Lid Inlay c. Description: This type of very old German beer steins is traditionally called the “Regensburg” type, by the name of the region where it was first produced, even though the majority of them were produced in the Westerwald region. These steins are different from the very traditional Westerwald beer vessels – they did not use cobalt-based glaze so the steins keep natural clay color. In Germany, they call them “Model” steins referring to the method of manufacturing. They were produced from the 1850s to the late 1870s. These steins were press-molded to a wooden form, they were turned afterward to make the insides round, then they were fired and the salt was applied to create the very solid surface. The stein is circa the mid- to late-1867s. The relief decor in front of the stein shows King Ga mbrinus – the legendary inventor of hopped malt beer. The lid is pewter with a porcelain inlay showing a man in bed with two ladies taking off his nightgown. The inscription reads: ” Er soll alle Stunden 1 Essloffel voll nehmen ist aber vorher erst tuchtig zu schüsseln ” (He should take 1 tablespoonful every hour, but he has to be scooped up beforehand). My German is not that good to understand the humor of it but I guess there is a word play – it’s the medicine that should be scooped, not the patient. The stein is in excellent condition – a rare thing for a stein this old. On the other side – this type of stoneware is extremely hard and sturdy. The traditional cobalt-blue stoneware tends to release inner tensions more frequently resulting in hairlines. The natural color stoneware is usually free of this problem. There are some minor firing lines and other small manufacturing flaws – the pottery was mostly a manual job, – but no damage or repairs whatsoever. Nice and impressive antique beer vessel with about 150 years of history behind it. It is quite large and impressive – it stands 10 tall to the top of the thumblift, over 1L capacity.
