Antique 1800’s hand painted porcelain glass pewter German lidded beer stein mug
Up for sale is a nice quality antique 19th century lidded German beer stein. The pewter lid has a wonderful convexed porcelain insert that is painted by hand with a wonderful figural scene. It is also engraved by hand on the edge of the lid reading Heinrich? And has an elaborate dimensional lion thumb piece. The hinged lid is mounted to a thick mold blown glass mug and in nice used condition. It measures 8 1/2 inches tall by 5 inches wide. It has some fogging inside the glass. Measures 13″ tall (Top of lid to base), has a 3.5″ opening, and a 5 diameter base. The base is recessed 2″ into the stein creating the “foot. Marked on the underside 243 over an 8. Beautiful highly detailed relief designs all around. Intricately embossed pewter lid, with fancy scrolled feather thumb lever. Vibrant cobalt blue over gray salt glaze. Gorgeous old German stein! Antique 1800’s Mettlach German Beer Stein Pattern 485 Pewter Lid. Motif is of German Beer Scene with Musicians Playing Instruments and Children. The Raised People and vines are beige, the background is a sage green, and the top and bottom of the stein is cream with light brown. The handle has a pewter attachment which holds the lid to the stein. The Lid of the stain has a musician playing the violin. Beautiful condition, no cracks or chips (please see pictures). Measures 8 1/4″ tall including the pewter that holds the lid, 4 1/8″ wide, and 5 long. The Inside of the Stein is White. The Bottom is #485 with Symbol of Church and METTLACH. For your consideration an Antique 1800’s German Lidded Glass & Pewter Beer Stein with Hand Painted Porcelain Insert in the Lid. Beautiful concave circle designs in the glass. Bottom has a “crown” logo/symbol embossed. Something inscribed in German on rim of pewter lid. I tried to transcribe but failed. I do not read German! The painting on the porcelain insert is in excellent condition and depicts a rural mountain scene, maybe Barvaria! Stein stands approximately 7 1/4 inches tall. There are no chips or cracks, but obviously age-wear due to use and storage. Please review photos closely to confirm condition.
