Antique Early German Pewter Beer Stein by J. P. Rehlen Nordingen c. 1820s
Antique Early Engraved Pewter German Beer Stein by J. Description: This antique pewter beer stein was made in Germany around the 1810s – 1820s. The stein is a very classical beer vessel made in the Biedermeier period of the first quarter of the 19th century. Pure tampered form and applied ribbon handle – this is typical South German shape. Nice lid with an urn-shaped thumblift – the distinctive Biedermeier feature. The lid is engraved with A. The stein is marked on the inside with the touchmarks that belong to Johann Paulus Rehlen – a master pewterer in the Bavarian town of Nordingen in the late 1700s – early 1800s see my pics. Nordingen is located between Munich and Nuremberg – South Germany, indeed. Excellent example of just pre-industrial beer stein production. Very excellent for the age condition with minimum wear, few small dings and some oxidation. Please note this is not a stein in “style” of 1820s, this is a real beer vessel from the early 19th century. I guarantee my description and dating. The stein is in excellent condition for the age. There are some minor scratches unavoidable in the soft metal like pewter, but no dents, breaks, tears or repairs. It is 9 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. Condition: Excellent w/minor age-related wear. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Track Page Views With. Antique German Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Factory Cold Paint Floral c. 1820s
Antique Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Factory Cold Paint Floral c. Description: Presented is an early German beer stein made around the early 1800s. The stein was made in the factory of Schrezheim – one of the largest faience factories in Germany. The stein is made from traditional Schrezheim clay and glazed with a beautiful distinctive Schrezheim blue tin glaze. It was then painted by one of the factory decorators, who created a beautiful dark blue and yellow floral ornaments around a central medallion – a very common subject for Schrezheim decoration. This is so-called “cold paint” – it was not fired, hence the age-related wear. Schrezheim was very famous in the late 1700s to early 1800s for it’s faience work and also for the best quality pewter lids. It was the longest-lasting factory – most of the faience production factories were shut in the early 1800s due to the competition from emerging stoneware industrialized production and cheaper glass production. But the Schrezheim factory lasted well into the late 1850s – early 1860s. The stein has a pewter lid with the urn-shaped thumblift and five-ring closed style hinge, and a foot ring. This type of pewter mounts are typical for the Biedermeier period of the 1810s – 1820s. There is also an incised monogram in the bottom in the shape of large “y”. It is not a factory mark or decorator’s initial – most likely, a control or other techcal mark The stein is in a relatively good condition for the faience piece this old. There is no cracks or hairlines – it’s quite rare for faience. The cold-painted decorations are worn, but it is quite common for this type of decor. There is a triangle-shaped chip in the upper part that was glued back see my detail pic. Other than that, there are no structural issues. The lid is in a good shape without breaks or tears, and sitting tight. It is large and impressive, standing 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. Height: 9.5 in. Antique Early German Saltglazed Stoneware Beer Stein Birnkrug Muskau c. Description: The beer steins made before 1850s are quite rare – at that time, before the industrial revolution, the production was all manual. Every stein made in the early period was unique, decorated by hand and rarely replicated. This beautiful stein was made in the early 1800s, around 1820s, it is guaranteed old give ot take 10 years. It was made in the town of Muskau – on the very East of Germany at the border with Poland. This brown-glazed “Birnkrug” or “pear-shaped stein” in German, was very popular during the first half of 1800s. The Muskau factory produced them in large quantities in all kinds of sizes. The Muskauer stoneware was slightly lighter with thinner walls than it’s Westerwald counterpart, but still very sturdy and strong. The stein is decorated with floral rosettes in the central frieze higlighted with black glaze – the distinctive Muskau type of decor. There is also the so-called “chip-carving” decorations between the rosettes. The lid is engraved with initials J. ” and number “12 – this is the tavern number used to identify the stein in a tavern. Many people in old Germany and even in the modern times kept their personal beer steins in their favorite tavern. The stein is in a good condition – there is a tight line in the neck, but nothing else – no chips or cracks, the pewter is in excellent shape. That’s a very good condition for a 200 years old piece. The stein is 10 tall to the top of the thumblift, about 1.5L capacity. I guarantee the authenticity. Condition: Tight line in the neck, otherwise excellent.
