Antique German Porcelain Character Beer Stein Monk withLithophane by E. Kick c. 1870
Antique German Porcelain Character Beer Stein – Monk w/Lithophane by E. Description: This very interesting German beer stein belongs to the family of character steins – steins made in a shape of an object or person. They are also called “figural”. This particular one is made in a shape of a smiling monk wearing red brown robe. His head forms the lid. It is fully hand-painted – the robe, his face, eyes and lips are hand-painted by a decorating artist. The porcelain character monk is relatively rare – there are many varieties of monk character steins in stoneware and pottery, but this stein is made of porcelain. It has a lithophane picture in the bottom – a picture that you can see against the light. The lithophane presents a picture of a flirting couple. The thumblift is made in form of a lyre – most likely, it was special ordered as a gift for a musician. This monk stein is well-known within the beer stein collectors community. It was once suggested that this stein was made by August Saeltzer, but most recent research disproved it. It is now positively determined that these porcelain monks and nuns were made by Eduard Kick in Amberg. The stein is in excellent condition, with some minimal age-related paint wear. There is no chips, cracks or repairs. It is 7 tall, 0,5L capacity. Condition: Excellent w/minimal paint wear. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting. Antique Early German Glass Beer Stein Blown and Molded withLion Thumblift 1830s
Antique Early German Glass Beer Stein – Blown and Molded with Lion Thumblift circa 1830s. Description: This beautiful and very old beer stein was made of blown glass in about 1830s – 1840s. The stein is very typical for the first half of the 1800s with large blown body and the ribbon type attached handle. The lover part of the body seems to be blown into a mold to create vertical facets without cutting. Very unusual and rare technique. Later, in 1860s, mold-blown glass steins became more common only to be replaced by pressed glass. This one shows the beginning of mold-blown technology. Nice pewter lid in perfect condition with a lion thumblift typical for late Biedermeier period of 1820 – 1830. Large 5-ring closed hinge. There is a pewterer’s hallmark on the inside of the lid – “Viehweg”. This mark belongs to one of the the master pewterers from the Vieweg (or Viehweg) family that was working in German Saxony for several generations. The stein is in excellent condition. Note, that the lower part of the handle is not broken – it was the method of attaching these days when the lower part was snapped after attaching. This method was used up to 1860s. Sometimes the snapped end was a little polished, but most of the time it was left as is. Please note – the stein is original from the period! I guarantee my description and dating. The stein is large and impressive, standing 7 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1 0.5 L capacity. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting.
