Antique Early German Faience Beer Stein Thueringen Factory dated 1799
Antique Early German Faience Beer Stein Thueringen Factory dated 1799. Description: Presented is a very impressive and beautiful old German beer stein manufactured in the region of Thuringia – an old German state located in central Germany – around late -1700s. Made of faience with very colorful hand-painted decorations that traditionally are associated with Thueringen factories. The decorations consist of a front and side medallions showing a flower painted in green, yellow, and blue. The rest of the stein is covered with magenta sponge background. This is very typical for Thueringen. Nice pewter lid with a large hollow ball for the thumblift and a lip ring. The lid is engraved initials C. There are two other letters on the lid – “TM” but they are scratched, not engraved so they are not significant. Probably the initials of the next owner. The stein is in fair good condition for the age. There are some hairlines, some enamel loss on the inside bottom, and the handle has a line in the middle. There is some glaze wear on the handle. There are also some minor pewter tears in the lid but the connection is quote solid and the exterior looks excellent. These are fair conditions for a beer stein that is over 220 years old. It displays good and appears quite impressive. It is standing 11 tall to the top of the thumblift, over 1L capacity. I guarantee my description and dating. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting. Small Antique Early German Westerwald Stoneware Beer Stein Walzenkrug

Antique Early German Westerwald Stoneware Beer Stein Walzenkrug c. Early 1700s
Antique Early German Westerwald Stoneware Beer Stein Walzenkrug c. Description: The beer steins made before 1800 are quite rare – at that time, before the industrial revolution, the production was all manual. Every stein made in the early period was unique, decorated by hand and rarely replicated. This beautiful stein was made in the early -1700s, it is guaranteed old give or takes 10 years. It is made in a very traditional style of grey stoneware with cobalt-blue glaze. This is a very traditional beer drinking vessel – a type that was produced for over centuries, from the mid-1600s to mid-1800s. The production of saltglazed stoneware beer steins in the Westerwald region of Germany reached the highest quality by the end of the 18th century. The stein is quite elaborately etched all over the body with beautiful floral decorations. The decorations are etched into the clay with a sharp instrument. The stein is also glazed with cobalt-blue and magenta glazes, fired and saltglazed. The decorations are quite intricate and labor-intensive. This complicated decor is a sign of the early 1700s, it was not used in the late 1700s as too expensive. The lid is pewter with hollow ball ribbed thumblift – this type of thumblifts was used throughout the entire 1700s. It is marked with the marks proper for the early 1700s pewter marks – I was not able to identify the pewterer, but the city mark suggests it was made in the town of Demmin in the North Germany. The stein is in excellent condition – there are no chips or cracks, no repairs. This is a very rare condition for such an old piece. There is also no damage or repairs to the pewter apart from normal wear. The stein is 8.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. I guarantee the authenticity. Height: 8.5 in. Antique Early German Stoneware Beer Stein Birnkrug Dreihausen c. 1840
Antique Early German Stoneware Beer Stein Birnkrug – Dreihausen c. Description: The beer steins made before 1850s are usually categorized as “early” – at that time, before the industrial revolution, the production was all manual. Every stein made in the early period was unique, decorated by hand and rarely replicated. It was made in the village of Dreihausen located in Hesse, in the very heart of Germany. It is also located near the historical stoneware production centers of Cologne and Siegburg that produced the first true stoneware in Europe. These brown-glazed “Birnkruge” or “pear-shaped steins” in German, along with many other household stoneware vessels, were produced in Dreihausen from the 13th century to the first half of 1800s. There were about 20 – 30 pottery shops in this small village at the peak of production in the mid-1700s. The Dreihausen stoneware was different from it’s Westerwald counterpart, – it was never salt-glazed. Instead the Dreihausen potters used to dip the already formed pieces into highly diluted loam slip of iron-rich clay that after firing formed this gorgeous shiny chocolate-brown surface. The stein is incised with the name “Rosina” on front – it was done when the clay was still wet before putting the slip. Apparently, it was done on a special order from a customer. The lid is pewter, with the thumblift in form of a sitting young boy – Cupid or Putto – holding a beer stein in his hand. The figural thumblifts appeared in German beer stein production around 1820. However, this is a unique and a very unusual thumblift. I’d like to speculate that the stein was made on a special order as a gift to a lady (Rosina) who just gave birth to a boy. The stein is in excellent condition – there are a couple of very minor glaze flakes – just normal age-related wear, but no chips or cracks, the pewter is in excellent shape. The stein is 7.25 tall to the top of the thumblift, about 0.5L capacity. I guarantee the authenticity. Height: 7.25 in. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting. Antique Early Pewter Engraved German Beer Stein Walzenkrug Saxonian dat. Description: This very interesting and impressive beer stein was made in Germany in the early 1800s. It is a so-called “Walzenkrug” – a cylindrical form beer drinking vessel that was very popular in 1700s. The thumblift is a hollow ball – please note that the hollow balls for the thumblift is a very good sign of authenticity. They never made solid balls for the thumblift before 1850 – 1860 and there is no repros with hollow balls – I guess it is very hard to reproduce. The form of the base and the lid is usually associated with Saxonian pewter tradition. The stein is elaborately engraved all over. It has a large Saxonian Coat-of-Arms engraved on the front with Saxonian Royal crown and floral de corations on the sides. Beautiful and skillful work of art. The lid is engraved with initials M. It is fully marked with pewterer’s and town marks for Carl Gottfried Klemm jr. A pewterer who became master in 1758 and inherited the shop from his father who established it in 1708 in Reichenbach, Saxony. I have provided a sc an of his pewter touch marks from the E. Hintze monumental work on German pewter marks see my last pic. The stein is in incredibly good condition – it has some very minimal dings but no damage whatsoever – a rare condition for beer steins this old. It is practically impossible to fake the touch marks of a real pewterer from the period. I have been collecting beer steins for many years and I can stand behind my words. The stein is large and impressive, it is 9 tall, about 1L capacity. Title: Antique Pewter German Beer Stein Wlazenkrug Saxonian c. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Track Page Views With.
Antique Early German Bavarian Pewter Beer Stein Walzenkrug Engraved dat. 1796
Antique German Bavarian Pewter Beer Stein Walzenkrug Engraved dat. Description: This very interesting and impressive beer stein was made in Germany about 200 years ago or more. It comes into the “Early” category – German beer stein manufactured before 1850 – the time of industrialization. Steins made before the industrial age were made and decorated by hand with every piece unique and special. It is a so-called “Walzenkrug” – a cylindrical form beer drinking vessel that was very popular in the 1700s – early 1800s. They never made solid balls for the thumblift before 1850 – 1860 and there are no repros with hollow balls – I guess it is very hard to reproduce. The lid of the stein is engraved with the original owner’s initials F. The inside of the lid shows the pewterer’s marks. The marks belong to Johann Adam Herold (or Herolt) who became a master in 1787 worked in the Bavarian town of Hof in the late 1700s. In fact, half of the pewterers ever worked in Hof had a family name Herold. The other half were Hohenners. I have in my inventory another beer stein fron Hof – it is dated 1836 and is the occupational shoemaker’s stein. The stein is in a very good condition – the pewter is very solid, there are some very minor age-related dings and scratches, but there is no major dents, damages or repairs whatsoever. Please note – the stein is an authentic original pewter drinking vessel from the late 1700s. The maker and the place are properly determined. The stein is 10.25 tall, 1L capacity. Height: 10.25 in.
