Antique German Green Glass and Silver Plate Beer Stein Historismus by WMF c. 1892
Antique German Green Glass and Silver Plate Beer Stein Historismus by WMF c. Description: Presented is a beautiful German beer stein made of hand-blown green glass with fantastic silverplated mounts. The stein was made in around 1892 and is designed in distinctive “Historismus” style with Renaissance style decorations and lion thumblift. The stein was manufactured by WMF or Wurtemburgische Metallwaren Fabrik – very famous for it’s Art Nouveau and Historismus designs and unique silverplate technique. It was designed under the influential sculptor/designer Albert Mayer. Mayer was appointed head of the Art Studio in 1894. WMF was a major German metal ware designer company, operating in many countries. The glass is stone cut creating facets for beautiful optical effects. There is a presentation engraving on the lid reading: Ihrem hochgeschatzen I. Vorsitzenden “Geselschaft Edelweiss 23/7/92″ – “To our esteemed 1st chairman of “Edelweiss Society” July 23d 1892″. Antique Early German Bohemian Glass Beer Stein Wheel Engraved Wedding c. 1820s
Antique Early German/Bohemian Glass Beer Stein – Wheel Engraved Wedding circa 1820s. Description: This beautiful and very old beer stein was made of blown glass in about 1810 – 1820s. The stein is decorated with copper wheel-engravings of good quality. The front of the stein is engraved with two doves sitting on a heart. This is usually a symbol of a wedding. There is a number “3” atop of the heart – the stein most likely was a gift for the third anniversary of marriage. The sides are engraved with beautiful floral ornaments. Nice pewter lid in perfect condition with beautiful and unusual thumblift and large 5-ring closed type hinge. The lid is typical for the period of 1810 – 1820s. It is engraved with the initials A. ” and number “48 which is most likely the tavern number – back in old days, people kept their beer stein in the tavern they go, so they could drink from their own steins. They put numbers on lid for faster recognition. Actually, this habit is still alive in some places in Germany. The stein also has pontil mark on the bottom and a nice ornate foot ring. The stein is in excellent condition. It was most likely kept in a closed compartment and rarely used. The pewter is in perfect shape and the lid is sitting tight. I guarantee my description and dating. The stein is large and impressive, it is 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. Height: 9.5 in. Auctiva offers Free Image Hosting and Editing.
