Antique German Stoneware Westerwald Beer Stein/Pitcher Unusual Teal Glaze c1820s
Large Antique German Saltglazed Stoneware Westerwald Etched Beer Stein/Pitcher Unusual Teal Glaze c. Hello, my dear customers! I will be out of the country from September 2nd to September 12th. Please keep this in mind! It is a very traditional type of serving beer steins or “master steins” – large with a bulbous form called “Birnkrug” or “pear-shaped steins”. The stein is made of saltglazed stoneware hand-turned and manually decorated with beautifully and intricately etched and incised into the body floral patterns. This was done with several kinds of wooden sticks when the clay was still soft. It is also glazed with a very unusual teal color glaze. The lid is pewter with the acorn thumblift and five-ring closed-type hinge with an ornate handle support. This types of hinge and thunblift were the most common from the mid-1700s to the mid-1800s. The lid is engraved with the original owner’s name: J. There is also a massive footring. The stein is in excellent condition for the age – there are no chips or cracks. There are some minor glaze crazing and manufacturing impurities due to the pre-industrial manual manufacturing technology. It is a large and impressive pouring stein, standing 11.5 to the top of the thumblift, about 2 L capacity. Condition: Excellent for the age. Height: 11.5 in. Antique German Pewter Beer Stein/Pitcher Kanne by J. G. Guenzler dated 1865
Antique Pewter German Beer Stein/Pitcher Kanne by J. Description: Antique German pewter beer stein/pitcher from about 1860s. Classical baroque-style shape with a spout – the Germans call it “Kanne”. Please note – it may not look like a standard beer pitcher. However, it is decorated with a hops cone and hops leaves. I doubt any other vessel would be decorated this way. A sit-on, not hinged lid. A “hops cone” for the finial -typical for the beer steins/pitchers. The handle is wrapped with a leather strap for preventing the hands from slipping. Marked on the inside with J. He became a master perwterer in 1833. The stein is engarved on the front with the name M. Schreppel and dated 1865. Excellent condition – there is no tears or any damage at all, no repairs, no major dings or scratches It is 10 tall to the top of the finial, 1L capacity. Please note – this is a real coffee vessel from mid-1800s, not a copy or fake. I guarantee my dating. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting.
