Antique Early Pewter German Beer Stein Walzenkrug Saxonian dat. 1815
Antique Early Pewter German Beer Stein Walzenkrug Saxonian dat. Hello, my dear customers! I will be out of the country from September 2nd to September 12th. Please keep this in mind! This very interesting and impressive beer stein was made in Germany in the early 1800s. It is a so-called “Walzenkrug” – a cylindrical form beer drinking vessel that was very popular in the 1700s. The thumblift is a hollow ball – please note that the hollow balls for the thumblift are a very good sign of authenticity. They never made solid balls for the thumblifts before 1850 – 1860 and there are no repros with hollow balls – I guess it is very hard to reproduce. The stein shows a plain cylindrical body with no decorations. This cylindrical body with a broad hollow base and tapered lid is associated with the Saxonian pewter tradition. For about 150 years Saxonian pewterers from Leipzig, Dresden, Chemnitz, and other Saxonian towns were making more or less similar pewter steins that were very popular all over Germany from the early 1700s till the 1850s. The lid is engraved with the initials J. The inside of the lid shows pewter hallmarks. These hallmarks belong to a pewterer named Johann Gottfried Bohme who worked in the Saxonian town of Dippoldiswalde in the 1700s and early 1800s. Please note that the German pewter marks of the 1700s – first half of the 1800s usually (but not necessarily always) consisted of two identical marks for a town and one personal master pewterer’s mark. The master mark for J. Bohme shows the date of 1708. This is supposed to be the date of the pewter shop establishment. However, about 50% of German master pewter marks for the period show this date. I don’t know why they put this date and the others put real dates into their marks. Probably, 1708 was the date of the pewter marking law and some of the pewterers wanted to show that their shops were started at the very beginning. The stein is in great condition – it has some very minimal dings and scratches unavoidable for the soft metal as pewter, but no breaks, tears or repairs – a rare condition for beer steins this old. The stein is large and impressive, it is 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. Condition: Very good – no damage, no repairs, some minor dings and scratches. Height: 9.5 in. Antique German Etched Beer Stein by M. Girmscheid- Bowling Theme #1087 c. 1900
Large Antique Etched Beer Stein by M. Girmscheid – Bowling Theme #1087 c. Description: Fantastic large antique German beer stein made in the “etched” technique that is usually associated with Mettlach. However, it was made by Matthias Girmscheid – one of the major beer stein manufacturers in early 1900s Germany. He established his own company in 1870 in Hoehr, now – Hoehr-Grenzhausen, the famous Westerwald stein-making area. The stein is made of pottery in an etched technique with hand-painted coloring. The design is quite interesting. The central medallion shows a man with a bowling ball ready to deliver. The side panels show people drinking in a tavern and saluting the bowler. Ein wack’rer Mann der kegeln kann. It’s a brave man who can bowl. Des Kegelspeil gibt Freuden viel. Bowling gives much happiness. The lid is made of ceramics without a framing pewter ring. This is typical for Girmscheid. It shows bowling pins and a bowl with the inscription Alle Neun! , the motto of the sport of bowling. The German version of bowling – Kegeln – was 9 pin game. This is a large stein measuring 10.25 tall with a capacity of 1 L. It is marked with the word “Germany” and model number 1087. The stein is in excellent flawless condition with only minimal paint wear. Condition: Excellent w/minor wear. Height: 10.25 in. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting. Antique German Etched Beer Stein by J. P. Thewalt Drinking Cavaliers #1296 c. 1900
Antique German Etched Beer Stein Drinking Cavaliers by Johann Peter Thewalt #1296 c. Description: This beautiful very old German beer stein is made in “etched” technique – the contours of the decoration are incised into the body. This technique was used by different manufacturers around the turn of the 19th century – the most famous was Mettlach, but also J. Remy, Hauber and Reuther, and some others used it to create very beautiful (and also expensive at the time) exclusive beer vessels. This one was made by Jo hann Peter Th ewalt around early 1900. The scene on the stein shows a group of Renaissance cavaliers drinking in a monastery yard with a monk coming from the cellar offering some more brew. The inscription reads: Ein guter Fund zur rechten Stund. A good find for the right hour. The stein is in excellent condition – no chips, lines or any other damages. The lid is pewter with a ceramic inlay which is also etched with two owls and a glass of wine (a symbol of drinking wisely in this case) and the word Prosit! – To your health! The stein is large and impressive, standing 10 tall, 1 L capacity. Maker: Johann Peter Thewalt. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Track Page Views With.

Antique German Beer Stein by Marzi/Remy Etched Renaissance Riders #1621 c. 1900
Antique German Beer Stein by Marzi and Remy Etched Renaissance Riders Farewell #1621 c. Description: This old stein was made by Marzi and Remy – one of the oldest and and famous stein-making factories located in Hohr-Grenzhausen. The stein was manufactured in the lat e 189 0s – early 1900s and is made in the “etched” technique – the contours of the drawing look like they are engraved – thus creating a very attractive decoration. The etched technique is usually associated with Mettlach stein but there were some other manufacturers that used this technology. It was very labor-intensive and expensive but produced excellent results. Etched Marzi and Remy steins are not so very common. The inscription reads: “Es ritten drei Reiter zum Thore hinaus” (Three horsemen rode out to the gate). These are the words from an old German song to the music of Franz Schubert dating back to the 1820s. The stein has a beautiful pewter lid with an etched ceramic inlay showing a portrait of a lady, and thumblift in the form of a jester. The stein is 9.5 tall to the top of the finial, 0.5 L capacity. Very nice and impressive drinking vessel. Excellent flawless condition – absolute collector’s dream. Year: early 19 00 s. Maker: Marzi and Remy. Height: 9.5 in. Large Antique German Saltglazed Stoneware Westerwald Etched Beer Stein/Pitcher Unusual Teal Glaze c. Hello, my dear customers! I will be out of the country from September 2nd to September 12th. Please keep this in mind! It is a very traditional type of serving beer steins or “master steins” – large with a bulbous form called “Birnkrug” or “pear-shaped steins”. The stein is made of saltglazed stoneware hand-turned and manually decorated with beautifully and intricately etched and incised into the body floral patterns. This was done with several kinds of wooden sticks when the clay was still soft. It is also glazed with a very unusual teal color glaze. The lid is pewter with the acorn thumblift and five-ring closed-type hinge with an ornate handle support. This types of hinge and thunblift were the most common from the mid-1700s to the mid-1800s. The lid is engraved with the original owner’s name: J. There is also a massive footring. The stein is in excellent condition for the age – there are no chips or cracks. There are some minor glaze crazing and manufacturing impurities due to the pre-industrial manual manufacturing technology. It is a large and impressive pouring stein, standing 11.5 to the top of the thumblift, about 2 L capacity. Condition: Excellent for the age. Height: 11.5 in. Antique Early German Brown Earthenware Beer Stein Melonenkrug Bunzlau c. Hello, my dear customers! I will be out of the country from September 2nd to September 12th. Please keep this in mind! Presented is a rare example of early German pottery. This high-fired earthenware brown-glazed beer stein was made in Bunzlau – a town in Lower Silesia in the mid-1700s. In fact, all the pottery production from small towns in Lower Silesia is called “Bunzlau” Every German town and every region that was known to make pottery had its own unique technologies and trade secrets. That’s why we can determine where a particular piece was made based on the appearance, style, and type of the pottery. The steins of this kind were called “Melonenkrug” or “Melon-shaped steins” because of their round shape and vertical or diagonal ribs. These ribs were made by hand from the inside initially and later with the help of a special instrument. The lead-based brown glaze was typical for Bunzlau. “Melon-shaped steins faded out of fashion after 1750″, -writes Beatrix Adler in her book “Early Stoneware Steins” based on Les Paul’s collection. “The last date we can find on a pewter mount is 1757″. The pewter lid is dome-shaped with a hollow ball thumblift. The inside of the lid is stamped with pewter marks that belong to Joahim Heinrick Kampffer, a pewterer in the town of Sagan in Lower Silesia, now Zagan in Poland. He was active in mid-1700s and died in 1771. The stein is large and impressive – it stands 9 tall to the top of the thumblif, with approx. 1.5 Liter capacity. A very similar, almost identical stein is featured in Gery Kirsner’s “The Beer Stein Book” on page 40. The stein is in good condition, the appearance is excellent. There are some small chips on the upper lip covered by the lid but no large chips, cracks, or repairs. The lid has the hinge rings broken – it could be separated from the stein. This is a very good condition overall for a stein over 250 years old (see pics). It is very impressive and elegant and a true historical piece that carries over 200 years of both culture and technology. I guarantee the authenticity. Condition: Minor chips, the hinge has broken rings. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting. Attention Sellers – Get Templates Image Hosting, Scheduling at Auctiva. Com. Track Page Views With.
