Antique Large Early German Brown Earthenware Beer Stein Birnkrug Bunzlau c. 1780s
Antique Large Early German Brown Earthenware Beer Stein Birnkrug Bunzlau c. Description: This is the fourth of the small collection of Bunzlau steins I post – it is the largest by far. Presented is a rare example of early German pottery made around the late-1700s. This high-fired earthenware brown-glazed beer stein was made in Bunzlau – a town in Lower Silesia. In fact, all the pottery production from small towns in Lower Silesia is called “Bunzlau” – there are no distinctive features to differentiate them. Every German region (and almost every town) that was known to make pottery had its own unique technologies and trade secrets. That’s why we can determine where a particular piece was made based on the appearance, style, and type of the pottery. The steins of this kind were called “Birnkruge” or “Pear-shaped steins” because of their pear-like shape They are glazed with glossy lead-based chocolate-brown glaze that was typical (and unique) for Bunzlau. The pewter lid is dome-shaped with a hollow ball thumblift. The pewter foot and lip rings were intended to support the pedestal and the neck from chipping and cracking. The stein is very large and impressive – it stands 15 tall to the top of the thumblift, with a 3L capacity. A very similar but smaller stein is featured in Gary Kirsner’s “The Beer Stein Book” on page 40 pic. The stein is in excellent condition, and the appearance is great. There is no cracks or chips or any other repairs. Some age-related glaze and pewter wear only. You can see some glaze crazing on the inside but it is not cracks since they don’t show on the outside. It is very impressive and elegant and a true historical piece that carries almost 250 years of both culture and technology. Please check my store. Condition: Excellent with a small crack at the neck secured by the neck ring. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Track Page Views With.

The inscription reads: All Heil! – that was the official motto of the bicycling sports. There are also side inscriptions that are hard to read. The stein was ma de by Marzi and Remy – one of the major names in ceramics manufacturing in the Golden Era of beer-stein pro duction in the late 1800s – early 1900s. This model was used for several different central medallion images including several Regimental, sports and occupational ones. The lid is engraved with the original owner’s name: “Gustav Scheuchzer”. A very nice and early example of sports memorabilia. Great ornate heav y pewter lid. The stein is in excellent condition with no damage and some minor age-related wear. The lid is sitting tight. Large Antique German Regensburg Beer Stein King Gambrinus Humorous Inlay c. 1870s
Large Antique German Regensburg Beer Stein King Gambrinus w/Humorous Porcelain Lid Inlay c. Description: This type of very old German beer steins is traditionally called the “Regensburg” type, by the name of the region where it was first produced, even though the majority of them were produced in the Westerwald region. These steins are different from the very traditional Westerwald beer vessels – they did not use cobalt-based glaze so the steins keep natural clay color. In Germany, they call them “Model” steins, referring to the method of manufacturing. They were produced from the 1850s to the late 1870s. These steins were press-molded to a wooden form, they were turned afterward to make the insides round, then they were fired, and the salt was applied to create the very solid surface. The stein is circa the mid- to late-1870s. The relief decor in front of the stein shows King Ga mbrinus – the legendary inventor of hopped malt beer. The lid is pewter with a porcelain inlay showing a gentleman drinking from a beer stein while three more and a full barrel are waiting for him to finish. My German is not that good to translate it perfectly, but I guess the point could be recognized. The stein is in excellent condition – a rare thing for a stein this old. On the other side – this type of stoneware is extremely hard and sturdy. The traditional cobalt-blue stoneware tends to release inner tensions more frequently, resulting in hairlines. The natural color stoneware is usually free of this problem. There are some minor firing lines and other small manufacturing flaws – the pottery was mostly a manual job, – but no damage or repairs whatsoever. Nice and impressive antique beer vessel with about 150 years of history behind it. It is quite large and impressive – it stands 8 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity.
