Antique German Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Factory Cold Paint Floral c. 1820s
Antique Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Factory Cold Paint Floral c. Description: Presented is an early German beer stein made around the early 1800s. The stein was made in the factory of Schrezheim – one of the largest faience factories in Germany. The stein is made from traditional Schrezheim clay and glazed with a beautiful distinctive Schrezheim blue tin glaze. It was then painted by one of the factory decorators, who created a beautiful dark blue and yellow floral ornaments around a central medallion – a very common subject for Schrezheim decoration. This is so-called “cold paint” – it was not fired, hence the age-related wear. Schrezheim was very famous in the late 1700s to early 1800s for it’s faience work and also for the best quality pewter lids. It was the longest-lasting factory – most of the faience production factories were shut in the early 1800s due to the competition from emerging stoneware industrialized production and cheaper glass production. But the Schrezheim factory lasted well into the late 1850s – early 1860s. The stein has a pewter lid with the urn-shaped thumblift and five-ring closed style hinge, and a foot ring. This type of pewter mounts are typical for the Biedermeier period of the 1810s – 1820s. There is also an incised monogram in the bottom in the shape of large “y”. It is not a factory mark or decorator’s initial – most likely, a control or other techcal mark The stein is in a relatively good condition for the faience piece this old. There is no cracks or hairlines – it’s quite rare for faience. The cold-painted decorations are worn, but it is quite common for this type of decor. There is a triangle-shaped chip in the upper part that was glued back see my detail pic. Other than that, there are no structural issues. The lid is in a good shape without breaks or tears, and sitting tight. It is large and impressive, standing 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. Height: 9.5 in. Antique German Jugendstil Glass Enameled Beer Stein des. By F. Ringer c. 1905
Antique German Jugendstil Glass Beer Stein Enameled des. Description: Great stein in Jugendstil (German Art Nouveau) style. Classical hand-blown bohemian glass with enameled decorations. Designed by Franz Ringer – he was the most famous Jugendstil artist and designer who actually created this style – inspired by Jugendstill/Art Nouveau historically stylized in early 1800s aesthetics called Biedermeier. A prominent painter and sculptor from Munich, he also created many well-known beer stein designs for Marzi and Remy, Villeroy and Boch Mettlach, Reinhold Merkelbach and many others. The design consists of a medallion with a scene of a hunter shooting a lleaping stag. The stein is not signed by FR signature, but this design is quite famous. You can see it in my scan of a page from “The Beer Stein Book” by Gary Kirsner, attributed to Ringer. The lid is pewter designed as well in this specific Jugendstil style. The glass steins with F. Ringer designs are quite rare – they’re really hard to find. Please keep in mind the old glass is absolutely safe to drink from – it could be cleaned perfectly as opposed to antique stoneware, pewter or pottery. The stein is in excellent condition. It is 8 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5 L capacity. Auctiva offers Free Image Hosting and Editing. Track Page Views With. Auctiva’s FREE Counter. Antique German Porcelain Beer Stein Occupational Miller withLithophane c. 1890s
Antique German Porcelain Beer Stein Occupational Miller w/Lithophane c. Description: This beer stein belongs to the “occupational” family of German beer vessels. It was made for a miller who was very proud of his occupation. The steins of this sort were quite expensive at the time and could be compared with the regimental or “Reservisten” family of collectible antique beer steins. The stein was made around 1880 – 1890 of hard porcelain with enameled art and ornate pewter lid. It is decorated with a nicely hand-painted over transfer outline of a pair of heraldic rampant lions holding a water wheel with other tools of the miller’s’s trade – millstone and grinding rolls. The name of the miller is written beneath: “Johann Hobmeier” The inscription reads: Hoch lebe das edle Handwerk der Muller! – Long live the noblde handcraft of the miller! The one at the very bottom says: “Eher soll die Welt verderben als vor Durst ein Muller sterben” – The world should come to an end before a miller should die of thirst. The stein has a lithophane – a picture in the bottom that you can only see through light – showing a loving couple kissing. Most likely, it’s a farewell kiss before the hunter goes to the mountains. The stein is in excellent condition, with only some minor age-related wear. There are no chips, cracks or lithophane crazing. The stein is 9.25 tall to the top of the finial, 0.5L capacity. I guarantee my description and dating! Condition: Excellent w/some minor wear. Height: 9.25 in. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Track Page Views With.
