Antique Pressed Glass Enameled German Stein Wedding Anniversary w/Inlaid Lid c. Description: This beautiful stein was made around the early 1900s. It was made of pressed glass with molded facets that were decorated by hand with colorful enamels in white, green and gold. The lid is pewter with porcelain relief inlay showing two holding hands with flowers and inscription: “Zum Andenken” – “For the memory”. The holding hands were ususally traditional German symbol of marrige – the stein was made as a wedding gift. It was very common to give beer steins as a wedding gift or wedding anniversaries gift. The steins were quite expensive at the time and considered a valueable gifts. The inscription in the front medallion says: “Zur Erinnerung” – which is basically the same – “For the memory”. The relief porcelain inlays were quite rare – I don’t remember seeing one from that time period. The lid is marked with letter “R” on the The stein is in excellent condition. You are ordering this 1/2 Liter, Rosskopf and Gerz, antique, German made, authentic Beer stein. Known dates for Rosskopf & Gerz were 1901 – 1917. Plastic was first developed around 1907, dating this stein likely closer to the end of that period. Mold number 456, cataloged as Art Nouveau Design. The steins design is attributed to decorator Karl Gorig. Fancy pewter, impressed lid with engraving that appears to be A. Unknown if that is a prior owner initial, place, or event? Antique Early German/Bohemian Glass Beer Stein – Wheel Engraved Wedding circa 1820s. Description: This beautiful and very old beer stein was made of blown glass in about 1810 – 1820s. The stein is decorated with copper wheel-engravings of good quality. The front of the stein is engraved with two doves sitting on a heart. This is usually a symbol of a wedding. There is a number “3” atop of the heart – the stein most likely was a gift for the third anniversary of marriage. The sides are engraved with beautiful floral ornaments. Nice pewter lid in perfect condition with beautiful and unusual thumblift and large 5-ring closed type hinge. The lid is typical for the period of 1810 – 1820s. It is engraved with the initials A. ” and number “48 which is most likely the tavern number – back in old days, people kept their beer stein in the tavern they go, so they could drink from their own steins. They put numbers on lid for faster recognition. Actually, this habit is still alive in some places in Germany. The stein also has pontil mark on the bottom and a nice ornate foot ring. The stein is in excellent condition. It was most likely kept in a closed compartment and rarely used. The pewter is in perfect shape and the lid is sitting tight. Antique Faience Beer Stein with Floral Bouquet Amberg Factory late-1700s. Description: Presented is an early German beer stein made around the late 1700s. The stein was made in the Amberg factory in South Germany. It shows all the features of South German faience – the straight top the foot ring sitting on the flared-out bottom. The stein is made with the hard and strong glaze that covers all the body including the bottom – close to creamware. It was then painted by one of the factory decorators who created a beautiful picture of a bouquet of flowers – a very common subject for German faience decorations and slightly different for every factory. The Amberg factory was established in 1759. It was producing faience from 1759 till 1795 when it switched to stoneware. The Amberg faience was very close to British creamware – it was fired before glazed, then again after glaze and the third time after being painted. The pewter mountings consist of a pewter lid with five-ring closed style hinge and the foot ring. The lid is engraved with the original owner’s initials M. The bottom of the stein is incised with Amberg factory mark. The stein is in very good almost excellent condition for the faience piece this old. There is no chips, cracks or hairlines – it’s quite rare for faience. There is some minor glaze wear on the handle and no other issues. The lid is in excellent condition and sitting tight. It is large and impressive, standing 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. Condition: minor glaze wear, bent lid – otherwise excellent. Height: 9.5 in. The stein is in overall good used estate condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. There is a slight amount of play in the pewter mount’s hinge, a small inclusion in the glass lid, light surface scratches and scuffing here and there, and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age. Antique German Art Nouveau/Jugendstil Pewter Serving Beer Stein by J. Presented is a beautiful and very stylish beer stein designed in a very distinctive Jugendstil style – the German version of Art Nouveau. This style is very specific to Germany – it is characterized by simplistic and at the same time unusual linear forms. This style was extremely popular at the time. It lasted only a decade or two, but changed the perception of design forever. The stein was made by the company J. In Munich – I was not able to identify the company but I guarantee the time period of 1910 – 1920. There is the presentation inscription engraved at the bottom: “ZUM 30 JAHR GEN PRAXIS JUBILAUM J”. It looks like the stein was presented to a doctor on his 30 years anniversary of practice. The stein is in a very good condition with some very minor dings unavoidable in the soft metal as pewter. It would require some cleaning but I will leave it to the new owner – some people prefer the antique look and patina for the pewter objects, some like to polish them to get a near silver impression it was inteneded to give at the time of manufacturing.
