Antique Early German Bavarian Pewter Beer Stein Walzenkrug Engraved dat. 1796
Antique German Bavarian Pewter Beer Stein Walzenkrug Engraved dat. Description: This very interesting and impressive beer stein was made in Germany about 200 years ago or more. It comes into the “Early” category – German beer stein manufactured before 1850 – the time of industrialization. Steins made before the industrial age were made and decorated by hand with every piece unique and special. It is a so-called “Walzenkrug” – a cylindrical form beer drinking vessel that was very popular in the 1700s – early 1800s. The thumblift is a hollow ball – please note that the hollow balls for the thumblift are a very good sign of authenticity. They never made solid balls for the thumblift before 1850 – 1860 and there are no repros with hollow balls – I guess it is very hard to reproduce. The lid of the stein is engraved with the original owner’s initials F. The inside of the lid shows the pewterer’s marks. The marks belong to Johann Adam Herold (or Herolt) who became a master in 1787 worked in the Bavarian town of Hof in the late 1700s. In fact, half of the pewterers ever worked in Hof had a family name Herold. The other half were Hohenners. I have in my inventory another beer stein fron Hof – it is dated 1836 and is the occupational shoemaker’s stein. The stein is in a very good condition – the pewter is very solid, there are some very minor age-related dings and scratches, but there is no major dents, damages or repairs whatsoever. Please note – the stein is an authentic original pewter drinking vessel from the late 1700s. The maker and the place are properly determined. The stein is 10.25 tall, 1L capacity. Height: 10.25 in. Antique German Yellow Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Kintsugi Gold Repair d. 1840
Antique German Yellow Glaze Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Kintsugi Gold Repair dated 1840. Description: Presented is a fantastic example of an early historical drinking vessels. This beer stein is made of faience. All old German faience could be attributed to a certain town of manufacturing. This one was made in the town of Schrezheim in around 1840 or earlier – quite often the steins were engraved and dated several years after manufacturing. Schrezheim was very famous in late 1700s to early 1800s for it’s faience work and also for the best quality pewter lids. This lid is alone a true piece of art of the “late Biedermeier” period of 1820 – 1840s. There is a spiked prolonged sphere for the thumblift – this is very typical for Biedermeier period. The lid is engraved with initials: A. And dated 1840 – 18 before the initials and 40 after. The lid medallion shows a lady and a gentleman with inscription “Ewige Freundschaft” – “Eternal friendship”. The body of the stein is glazed with a beautiful yellow glaze – this is the typical Schrezheim glaze, easily recognizable. The stein was broken and restored using the Japanese Kintsugi technique – instead of repainting the whole thing and covering the original surface, the repair seams are highlighted with gold leaving most of the stein in original state and creating a wonderful unique appearance. There is a mark on the bottom inscribed in the wet clay, most likely the decorator/glazer initial. The stein is large and impressive – 10.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1 1/4 L capacity. Antique German Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Factory Cold Paint Floral dat. 1819
Antique Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Factory Cold Paint Floral dat. Description: Presented is an early German beer stein made around the early 1800s. The stein was made in the factory of Schrezheim – one of the largest faience factories in Germany. The stein is made from traditional Schrezheim clay and glazed with a beautiful distinctive Schrezheim blue tin glaze. It was then painted by one of the factory decorators who created a beautiful red and gold picture of a bouquet of flowers – a very common subject for Schrezheim decoration. This is so-called “cold paint” – it was not fired, hence the age-related wear. Schrezheim was very famous in the late 1700s to early 1800s for it’s faience work and also for the best quality pewter lids. It was the longest-lasting factory – most of the faience production factories were shut in the early 1800s due to the competition from emerging stoneware industrialized production and cheaper glass production. But the Schrezheim factory lasted well into the late 1850s – early 1860s. The pewter lid has the hollow ball thumblift and five-ring closed style hinge. The lid is engraved with the original owner’s initials F. D and dated 1819. Please note – this is the real date, the stein was made in or before the year 1819. Note the ornate strap support and pewter reinforcement at the bottom of the handle. The stein is in a very good condition for the faience piece this old. There is no cracks or hairlines – it’s quite rare for faience. There is a very small cut on the bottom edge that was made for a possible foot ring and no other issues with the body. The lid is in perfect shape and sitting tight. There is also an incised monogram in the bottom – most likely the decorator’s mark. It is large and impressive, standing 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. Condition: Excellent for the age w/some paint wear. Height: 9.5 in. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting. Antique Early German/Bohemian Glass Beer Stein – Wheel Engraved Wedding circa 1820s. Description: This beautiful and very old beer stein was made of blown glass in about 1810 – 1820s. The stein is decorated with copper wheel-engravings of good quality. The front of the stein is engraved with two doves sitting on a heart. This is usually a symbol of a wedding. There is a number “3” atop of the heart – the stein most likely was a gift for the third anniversary of marriage. The sides are engraved with beautiful floral ornaments. Nice pewter lid in perfect condition with beautiful and unusual thumblift and large 5-ring closed type hinge. The lid is typical for the period of 1810 – 1820s. It is engraved with the initials A. ” and number “48 which is most likely the tavern number – back in old days, people kept their beer stein in the tavern they go, so they could drink from their own steins. They put numbers on lid for faster recognition. Actually, this habit is still alive in some places in Germany. The stein also has pontil mark on the bottom and a nice ornate foot ring. The stein is in excellent condition. It was most likely kept in a closed compartment and rarely used. The pewter is in perfect shape and the lid is sitting tight.
