Antique German/Bohemian Glass Beer Stein Clear w/White Overlay Wheel Cut c. Description: This beautiful old stein was mouth-blown of crystal glass around the 1870s. The majority of steins of this type were made in German Bohemia – now Czech Republic. It was made using a very complex and labor-intensive technique called “overlay” – a freshly-blown clear glass stein was submerged into a white glass to create a layer of white overlay. It was then stone-cut, creating heart-forming facets that reveal the clear glass surface. The handle is attached the white glass layer and also stone-cut. The lid has a porcelain overlay with a beautiful miniature painting of a couple riding a boat with a musician to entertain them. This is a real hand-painted miniature, not the usual paint over transfer outline. There is a polished-out pontil mark on the bottom. The pewter mounts have a 3-ring open hinge and ornate thumblift – the typical techniques used in the 1870s. The stein is in excellent mint condition. Antique Pressed Glass Enameled German Stein Wedding Anniversary w/Inlaid Lid c. Description: This beautiful stein was made around the early 1900s. It was made of pressed glass with molded facets that were decorated by hand with colorful enamels in white, green and gold. The lid is pewter with porcelain relief inlay showing two holding hands with flowers and inscription: “Zum Andenken” – “For the memory”. The holding hands were ususally traditional German symbol of marrige – the stein was made as a wedding gift. It was very common to give beer steins as a wedding gift or wedding anniversaries gift. The steins were quite expensive at the time and considered a valueable gifts. The inscription in the front medallion says: “Zur Erinnerung” – which is basically the same – “For the memory”. The relief porcelain inlays were quite rare – I don’t remember seeing one from that time period. The lid is marked with letter “R” on the The stein is in excellent condition. Antique Early German/Bohemian Glass Beer Stein – Wheel Engraved Wedding circa 1820s. Description: This beautiful and very old beer stein was made of blown glass in about 1810 – 1820s. The stein is decorated with copper wheel-engravings of good quality. The front of the stein is engraved with two doves sitting on a heart. This is usually a symbol of a wedding. There is a number “3” atop of the heart – the stein most likely was a gift for the third anniversary of marriage. The sides are engraved with beautiful floral ornaments. Nice pewter lid in perfect condition with beautiful and unusual thumblift and large 5-ring closed type hinge. The lid is typical for the period of 1810 – 1820s. It is engraved with the initials A. ” and number “48 which is most likely the tavern number – back in old days, people kept their beer stein in the tavern they go, so they could drink from their own steins. They put numbers on lid for faster recognition. Actually, this habit is still alive in some places in Germany. The stein also has pontil mark on the bottom and a nice ornate foot ring. The stein is in excellent condition. It was most likely kept in a closed compartment and rarely used. The pewter is in perfect shape and the lid is sitting tight. Antique German Theresienthal Brownish Green Glass Beer Stein Engraved dated 1892. Description: This beautiful antique beer stein was made of blown glass in around the late 1880s. The glass is colored in beautiful brownish-green, with the slightly curved body shape and hand-formed pedestal. The specific bottle-green/brownish color is the distinctive feature of Theresienthal factory’s production. The Theresienthal factory established in 1836 in the town of Zwiesel in Bavaria. The stein has vertical facets with oval “thumb-pressed” patterns on the inside. It creates a wonderful optical effect. The hand-formed pedestal made in vawed shape and polished on the bottom. Antique German Glass Biedermeier Beer Stein Blown Enameled Freundschaft c1840s
Antique German Saxonian Biedermeier Glass Beer Stein Blown and Enameled Freundschaft c. A classical German glass beer stein from the period of late Biedermeier 1820s – to 1850s. Beer steins made before 1850 fall into the “early” category – they were nade w pre-industrial period using manual techniques and old technologies. Blown crystal glass with applied thick handle and large pontil mark. Squeezed-ball thumblift and five-ring closed type hinge – all typical for the late Biedermeier period. Hand-painted and decorated with beautiful enameled decorations using great skills – a true antique art object. This type of glass beer steins were made in the German state of Saxony in 1820s-1850s. The shield on front is inscripbed with gold – the inscription is worn but I think it says “Freundschaft” – “Friendship” – the stein was given by someone as a gift to a friend. The lid is engraved with the intials J. Very good condition of the glass with some age-related wear to the paint. Nice very typical beer drinking vessel over 180 years old! I guarantee my dating. 5.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, about 0.4 L capacity. Please note that the glass beer steins are perfectly safe to use for their purpose – to drink beer!
